Former Chief Justice of Nigeria, Mohammed Uwais, has died aged 88.

He passed away on Friday, 5 June. His death marks the end of a distinguished legal career that significantly impacted the Nigerian judiciary.

Justice Uwais served as the Chief Justice of Nigeria from 1995 to 2006. During his tenure, he was instrumental in several judicial reforms, aiming to strengthen the independence and integrity of the judiciary.

Born on 12 June 1936, in Zaria, Kaduna State, Uwais completed his legal education in London before returning to Nigeria, where he quickly rose through the ranks of the legal system.

He was known for his commitment to justice, fairness, and judicial independence.

Justice Uwais also chaired the Electoral Reform Committee in 2007, which made significant recommendations to improve the electoral process in Nigeria. His contributions continue to influence the country's legal and electoral frameworks today.

Presidential Tribute: A Phenomenal Jurist and Statesman

In a statement released by the Nigerian presidency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu expressed his condolences and highlighted Justice Uwais's exceptional service to the nation.

"In Justice Uwais, Nigeria lost a phenomenal jurist and statesman who served with honor, courage, and exceptional integrity," the statement read.

The president joined family members, friends, and well-wishers in mourning the respected patriot, noting his stabilizing role during challenging times. 

President Tinubu praised Uwais's leadership in retirement, particularly his role in leading a federal panel to investigate electoral conduct. "Given his pedigree and personal integrity, he was the right person for that onerous assignment," Tinubu remarked.
