The Round of 16 of the I Beg To Differ Secondary School Debate Tournament continued on Wednesday, Nov. 26, with two heated matchups and a lot of suspense.
First up was Timi Comprehensive College against the International School, University of Lagos, debating the topic: “National Resilience Depends More on Citizens Than Leaders.”
Timi opposed the motion, while International School supported it.
International School edged the Presentation round with 30 points against Timi’s 26.5.
But Timi bounced back strongly in the rebuttal round, securing a clean sweep of 30 points as all judges awarded them full marks, while International College managed 21 points.
Both schools tied in the final diction score with 10 points each, but Timi’s overall performance sealed it.
They finished with 94.5 points against ISL’s 90, earning Timi Comprehensive College a well-deserved place in the quarterfinals.
The second debate featured Heritage Group of Schools and Lifejoy Academy on the topic: “Corporate Social Responsibility Should Focus More on Sustainability Than Philanthropy.”
Heritage opposed the motion, while Lifejoy supported it.
Heritage dominated from the start, scoring a unanimous 30 points in the Presentation round and another 30 in the rebuttal, while Lifejoy followed with 25 and 21.5 points.
A 30–28 finish in the final round and a tie in diction pushed Heritage to a total of 100 points, far ahead of Lifejoy’s 84.5. It’s a sweet victory for Heritage, finally breaking through to the quarterfinals on their third attempt.
