The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has denied claims circulating on social media that its Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, SAN, endorsed a partisan post on X (formerly Twitter).

In a statement issued on Friday, the Chairman’s media aide, Adedayo Oketola, said the allegation was false and described the viral post as fabricated.

“The allegation is entirely baseless and a total fabrication,” the statement read.

The Commission stated that Amupitan does not operate any personal account on X and has not engaged in partisan commentary.

“For the avoidance of doubt, the INEC Chairman does not own or operate any personal account on X,” Oketola added.

INEC said the claim emerged at a time the Commission is focused on electoral reforms and preparations for upcoming polls, warning that such misinformation could undermine public confidence.

It also raised concerns over the increasing use of fake social media accounts in the Chairman’s name, alleging that some have been used by cybercriminals to defraud members of the public.

According to the statement, several fraudulent accounts had previously been identified and reported to security agencies.

INEC said it is working with relevant authorities to track those behind the latest incident and warned that identity theft and the spread of false or manipulated online content are punishable under the law.

The Commission urged the public to disregard the viral post and rely on its official communication channels for accurate information.
