The detained leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, has dropped his earlier plan to call defense witnesses in his ongoing trial for alleged terrorism offenses.

Appearing in court on Monday, Kanu stated he had reviewed his case file and concluded that there was no valid charge against him, negating the need for a defense.

The court had previously adjourned the case on October 24 to allow Kanu to open his defense on October 27. The IPOB leader had initially submitted a letter to the court indicating his intention to call witnesses and requesting time to study his case file, applying for witness summons to be issued.

However, at the resumed hearing, Kanu informed the court of his change in strategy. He argued that his review of the case file led him to the conviction that the entire process was an "unlawful trial" due to the absence of a "valid charge" against him. Consequently, he asserted that opening a defense would be unnecessary.

The decision marks a significant turn in the high-profile case, which has drawn considerable attention across Nigeria, particularly in the South-East region.
