The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has declared support for the ongoing strike by the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) and warned it could mobilise nationwide solidarity action if governments fail to address worsening insecurity and secure the release of abducted victims.
In a statement by NLC President Joe Ajaero, the labour centre said it stands with teachers following repeated kidnappings of educators, students and pupils across the country.
Ajaero described the industrial action as a response to persistent attacks on education workers, saying it represents “the resolve of teachers to take their destiny in their hands instead of waiting to be slaughtered to the last person.”
He added that the strike serves as “a gentle but unignorable nudge” for governments to confront what he described as a worsening “insecurity crisis.”
The NLC expressed concern over the safety of teachers and other workers, including health personnel and local government staff, who have increasingly become targets of criminal attacks. Ajaero said the labour movement was “heart-broken” by the abduction of schoolchildren in Oyo State, describing the situation as distressing.
He warned that Nigeria cannot continue to ignore escalating insecurity, citing repeated attacks across states including Zamfara, Oyo, Plateau, Kogi and others.
“The NLC will not hesitate to do a solidarity action with the teachers or any other group of workers if government does not take more seriously the issues of our collective security,” Ajaero said.
The labour leader urged governments at all levels to move beyond assurances and take concrete steps to address insecurity, calling for urgent action to secure the release of abducted persons.
