Zamfara State Governor Dauda Lawal on Thursday launched the distribution of fertilisers and farm inputs to farmers across the state as part of efforts to strengthen dry-season farming, improve food security, and enhance livelihoods.

The distribution, flagged off at the Fadama III facility of the Ministry of Agriculture in Gusau, includes 3,920 bags of NPK fertiliser, 1,956 bags of Urea fertiliser, 3,920 litres of herbicide, 1,956 litres of insecticide, and 3,920 sachets of seed-dressing chemicals.

According to a statement by the governor’s spokesperson, Sulaiman Bala Idris, the inputs are aimed at improving crop yields, reducing post-planting losses, and promoting sustainable agricultural practices.

Speaking at the event, Lawal described agriculture as the backbone of the state’s economy and reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to supporting farmers with the resources needed to thrive.

“We are all aware that farming is the backbone of our economy, and it is our responsibility to support farmers with the necessary resources to thrive,” the governor said.

“This distribution is aimed at bolstering dry-season farming and expanding food production.”

He noted that the NG-CARES programme has laid a strong foundation for agricultural interventions in Zamfara, adding that previous support initiatives have reached tens of thousands of smallholder farmers through improved seeds, agrochemicals, and agronomic guidance.

Lawal urged beneficiaries to make judicious use of the inputs, expressing confidence that the intervention would drive sustainable agricultural development and help reduce the country’s reliance on food imports.

Addressing security concerns, the governor acknowledged that insecurity remains a challenge but assured farmers that his administration would continue strengthening the state’s security architecture to enable safe farming activities.

He also commended development partners and the Federal Government for their support of the NG-CARES programme, which he said has significantly improved yields, incomes, and food security in the state.

The Zamfara government pledged to sustain similar interventions and introduce new policies to address emerging challenges in the agricultural sector.
