The federal government has released N2.3 billion to clear salary and promotion arrears owed to lecturers in universities nationwide.
Education minister Dr. Tunji Alausa announced the payment on Wednesday, saying it is part of efforts to prevent a possible strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).
“This release reflects President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to resolving long-standing welfare issues in the education sector transparently and sustainably,” Alausa said.
According to the Ministry of Education’s Director of Press, Folasade Boriowo, the payment represents Batch 8 of arrears processed through the Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation.
Alausa added that the government is also finalising pension remittances and other deductions, and plans are underway to integrate the Earned Academic Allowance into lecturers’ salaries from 2026.
“Our ongoing talks with university unions are sincere and aimed at achieving lasting stability in the tertiary education system,” he said.
