“The surge in examination malpractice threatens the very core of WAEC’s mandate.” Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama issued that warning as the 74th Annual Council Meeting of the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) ended in Accra, Ghana.

Represented by Vice President Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang at the March 24–28 meeting, Mahama urged stakeholders to safeguard the integrity of examinations, calling on all to “say no to malpractice and yes to integrity.”

The meeting concluded with the election of Ghana’s Chief Government Nominee, Prof. Ernest Kofi Davis, as vice chairman of the council for a one-year term. He succeeds Liberia’s Amos Armah Fully.

Mahama commended WAEC for sustaining educational standards across West Africa, describing it as “one of the most successful examples of regional collaboration” on the continent.

Ghana also announced it will resume participation in the international version of the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) beginning in 2026.

WAEC honoured top-performing candidates from the 2025 WASSCE, with Ghana’s Huda Suglo Suleman emerging as the best candidate in West Africa.

Council Chairman Prof. Thomas Yormah thanked the Ghanaian government for hosting the meeting, which reviewed WAEC’s operations and adopted measures to strengthen assessment credibility.

The next council meeting will be held in Nigeria in March 2027.
