Multiple explosions have rocked Maiduguri, the capital of Borno State, leaving many feared dead and scores injured in what authorities describe as a major security incident.

The blasts, which occurred on Monday evening, were reported in multiple locations across the city, including the Post Office area, the popular Monday Market, the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital, and parts of the Kaleri neighbourhood.

Eyewitnesses said the explosions triggered panic, with emergency responders rushing victims to nearby medical facilities.

Officials have yet to confirm the exact number of casualties, but emergency services indicated that many people were killed or injured, with over 200 reportedly receiving treatment at hospital facilities.

Some victims were said to have died at the scene or while being transported for medical care.

Governor Babagana Umara Zulum condemned the attacks, describing them as “barbaric” and “inhumane,” while urging residents to remain calm and vigilant.

Security agencies have since been deployed to affected areas, and investigations are ongoing.

Although no group has officially claimed responsibility, the incident comes amid renewed attacks in Nigeria’s North-East, where extremist groups such as Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa Province have intensified assaults on military positions and civilian targets in recent weeks.

Residents have been advised to avoid affected areas as security operatives continue search, rescue, and assessment operations.
