The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has issued a public health warning urging Nigerians not to buy or consume Goya Oil sold in PET plastic bottles.

The agency stated that these products are counterfeit and unsafe for consumption

At a media briefing held at the agency’s Investigation and Enforcement Directorate office in Lagos on Friday, Dr. Martins Iluyomade, NAFDAC’s Director of Investigation and Enforcement, addressed concerns over counterfeit Goya Oil.

He said that the only legitimate Goya Oil on the Nigerian market is the one imported in original glass bottles by authorised distributors.

“Goya Oil sold in plastic bottles is fake,” Iluyomade told journalists, stressing that the product has no licence from NAFDAC and should not be consumed.

NAFDAC officials said that during enforcement operations in Oke-Arin Market in Idumota, Lagos, they uncovered a large-scale operation producing counterfeit Goya Oil.

According to the agency, the fake product was made by mixing burnt palm oil with colouring and repackaging it in plastic bottles to resemble the genuine brand.

Iluyomade warned that many unsuspecting Nigerians have been using the fake oil, which poses significant health risks.

He also cautioned religious organisations and market traders not to allow or sell the PET-bottled version, saying those who do could face prosecution.

The agency urged members of the public to report suspected fake products to the nearest NAFDAC office for swift action.
