The Oba Rilwan Akiolu has reaffirmed support for the Nigerian Navy ahead of the service’s 70th anniversary celebration, commending its role in safeguarding Nigeria’s territorial waters and strengthening maritime security.

The monarch gave the assurance on Wednesday when the Commander of Nigerian Navy Ship BEECROFT, Commodore A. Adams-Aliu, paid him a courtesy visit at his palace in Isale Eko, Lagos.

The visit was part of preparations for the Navy’s 70th anniversary celebration scheduled for May 29 to June 4. Adams-Aliu formally invited the traditional ruler to participate in the commemorative events and sought his royal support for the celebration.

Speaking during the visit, the naval commander described the anniversary as a major milestone that reflects seven decades of dedication to maritime security, national defense and regional stability.

He also stressed the importance of sustained collaboration between the Navy and traditional institutions, particularly in coastal communities where maritime activities play a key role in economic development and security.

“The anniversary represents decades of dedication and sacrifice in protecting Nigeria’s maritime interests,” Adams-Aliu said.

Responding, Akiolu praised the Navy’s contributions to maritime safety and national security, while pledging continued support for initiatives aimed at promoting peace, unity and stability within the maritime sector.

Events lined up for the anniversary include parades, an International Fleet Review at the Eko Atlantic waterfront, community outreach programs and exhibitions showcasing the Navy’s operational achievements and historical legacy.

The Nigerian Navy said the celebration would highlight its contributions to national development since its establishment 70 years ago.
