The Netherlands continues to strengthen its partnership with Nigerian agencies in combating human trafficking, Consul General Michel Deelen said in Lagos during a recent interview.
Deelen highlighted two key fronts in their joint efforts: raising public awareness about the dangers of trafficking and supporting Nigerian authorities in investigating and prosecuting traffickers.
“Many people don’t realize how dangerous it is or where they will end up,” he said, adding that awareness campaigns have been successful in reducing trafficking numbers.
On law enforcement, Deelen noted, “There have been quite a number of successes in Nigeria, with arrests and convictions of traffickers.”
He emphasized that tackling human trafficking is a long-term effort, shaped by Nigeria’s socio-economic challenges.
“This is not a magic bullet,” Deelen explained. “People often seek better futures abroad. Improving the economic situation is crucial to reducing trafficking.”
The Netherlands has partnered with NAPTIP and other organizations for many years, reinforcing a sustained commitment to protecting vulnerable Nigerians and dismantling trafficking networks.
“It's a long-term project,” he concluded, “and we will continue working together to achieve lasting results.”
