The Nigeria Guild of Editors and Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project have called on Bola Ahmed Tinubu to investigate the voiced threat against Channels Television presenter Seun Okinbaloye.

The groups condemned comments made by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, describing them as troubling and a threat to press freedom.

They urged the federal government to carry out a prompt and transparent investigation, while ensuring the safety of Okinbaloye and other journalists.

The call follows remarks reportedly made by Wike during a media chat, which sparked concerns among media stakeholders.

NGE and SERAP said the incident reflects a growing pattern of intimidation and harassment of journalists, warning that press freedom in Nigeria is under pressure.

They stressed that public officials must tolerate scrutiny and criticism, noting that freedom of expression applies to journalists in the course of their duties.

The groups also urged authorities, including the office of Lateef Fagbemi, to investigate all reported attacks on journalists and ensure accountability.

They warned that failure to act could encourage further violations and weaken democratic accountability in the country.
