The Federal Government says it is considering a new arrangement that would allow journalists to accompany military units during selected operations to improve security reporting and strengthen public understanding of counterinsurgency efforts.

Chief of Defence Staff, Christopher Musa, disclosed this at the National Security Summit organised by the Nigeria Union of Journalists in Abuja.

He was represented by his Special Adviser, Rear Admiral Olusanya Bankole.

Musa said the media plays a critical role in shaping public perception of security operations, noting that modern conflicts are increasingly influenced by information and narratives as much as by battlefield engagements.

According to him, the success of security operations should not be measured solely by military victories but also by the level of public trust and confidence in security institutions.

He described the media as “stabilizers of government” in the information space and stressed the importance of collaboration between journalists and security agencies.

The defence chief said the proposed initiative forms part of broader efforts to enhance transparency in military operations, improve communication and counter misinformation amid ongoing security challenges across the country.

He added that closer engagement with the media would help ensure more accurate reporting and provide the public with better insight into the efforts of security forces.
