The Federal Government of Nigeria says it is intensifying efforts to modernise Nigeria’s armed forces through international partnerships, technology transfer and the development of local defence production capacity.

The Minister of Defence, Christopher Musa, disclosed this during a working visit to Monaco alongside senior ministry officials.

According to a statement issued on Wednesday by Enderline Chukwu, the initiative forms part of plans to strengthen Nigeria’s defence architecture through the proposed Multi-domain Hybrid Intelligence Shield project.

Musa said the Ministry of Defence was working with MARSS UK Ltd and its Nigerian partner, MPS Mikopowers Ltd, on the project aimed at improving intelligence, surveillance and integrated security operations.

The minister explained that the visit involved technical engagements, strategic discussions and demonstrations of advanced defence technologies designed to improve command and control capabilities.

“We must leverage technology for intelligence, surveillance and service delivery. We have partners and allies ready to support us, and we will continue to work with them as a team,” he said.

Musa stressed the importance of building indigenous operational capacity while also collaborating with international partners to address terrorism, piracy, illegal mining, border insecurity and threats linked to unmanned aerial systems.

He added that discussions during the visit also focused on plans to establish national and regional command centres, mobile response units and a Centre of Excellence for simulation, training and doctrine development.

According to the minister, the initiative aligns with Nigeria’s broader defence diplomacy strategy aimed at strengthening national security, improving inter-agency coordination and enhancing resilience against emerging global threats.

The Nigerian delegation also witnessed demonstrations of advanced technologies including radar detection systems, artificial intelligence-powered threat identification tools, drone interception systems and mobile surveillance platforms.
