Nigeria’s Minister of Transportation, Saidu Ahmed Alkali, has resigned from office to pursue the Gombe State governorship seat ahead of the 2027 general elections.

His resignation follows a directive by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu requiring political appointees seeking elective office to step down in line with provisions of the Electoral Act.

Alkali tendered his resignation after a meeting with the president at the State House, with the decision later confirmed by his media aide. The Presidency has since accepted his resignation and commended his service.

He is expected to contest the 2027 governorship election in Gombe State, aiming to succeed incumbent Governor Inuwa Yahaya, whose tenure ends in May 2027.

Alkali becomes one of several cabinet members to step down to pursue political ambitions ahead of the next election cycle, following the federal government’s directive aimed at ensuring a level playing field during party primaries.

Before his appointment as minister in August 2023, he served as senator representing Gombe North, bringing legislative experience to his role in the transportation sector.
