President Bola Tinubu and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan on Tuesday reaffirmed plans to deepen economic and security cooperation between Nigeria and Türkiye, setting a target of reaching a five-billion-dollar bilateral trade volume.

Tinubu, who is on a state visit to Ankara, said discussions between both leaders focused on expanding trade and investment, energy cooperation, education, defence, peace and security, as well as the establishment of a Joint Economy and Trade Committee aimed at boosting capital flows and Turkish investment in Nigeria.

The Nigerian president said Erdoğan acknowledged Nigeria’s ongoing economic reforms, particularly in the energy sector, and expressed confidence in the country’s efforts to build a more inclusive economy.

Security cooperation also featured prominently in the talks, with Tinubu noting that Nigeria remains committed to promoting peace and stability across Africa. He said Türkiye’s willingness to collaborate in areas such as military training, intelligence sharing and counter-terrorism would strengthen efforts to counter instability in the Sahel region and beyond.

At the end of the meetings, both countries exchanged nine agreements covering defence, education, media, diaspora affairs, trade, social development and institutional cooperation between their foreign ministries.

Tinubu said Nigeria remained open to partnerships that promote trade, investment and shared prosperity, adding that the country would continue to engage globally with confidence.
