The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) says it has foiled an attempt to smuggle psychoactive substances into the Medium Security Custodial Centre, Kuje, in the Federal Capital Territory.

FCT Command spokesperson Samson Duza said in a statement on Monday that the incident occurred around 12:45 p.m. on Saturday, when a man identified as Njimogu Ikedi attempted to visit an inmate while concealing cannabis sativa and other suspected drugs in his clothing.

According to Duza, the contraband was discovered during a routine search by custodial officers. The Controller of Corrections in charge of the FCT Command, Christopher Jen, ordered the suspect’s immediate arrest and handover to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for investigation and prosecution.

Jen warned that individuals attempting to smuggle illegal substances into custodial centres would face the law, stressing that NCoS personnel remain vigilant.

He also urged Nigerians to support the Service’s mandate of rehabilitating offenders and maintaining public safety.

The attempted smuggling comes just over a year after a similar case in July 2024, when a woman was caught trying to sneak suspected drugs into the same Kuje facility.
