The Nigerian government has processed 14,000 electronic visas (e-visas) and announced measures to penalize foreigners who overstay their visas.

The announcement was made during a press briefing in Abuja by the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, who emphasized the government's commitment to maintaining the integrity of Nigeria's immigration system.

The federal government has set a deadline of August 1to begin imposing stiff penalties on overstayers.

Among the new measures is the introduction of a $15 daily surcharge for each day a visitor remains in the country beyond their permitted stay, as stamped in their passport.

Defaulters also face significant re-entry bans. According to the implementation guidelines published by the Nigeria Immigration Service, overstays of six months will incur a five-year re-entry ban, while those who remain a year or more will face a 10-year ban.

"This initiative is crucial for ensuring that our immigration laws are respected and that our borders remain secure. We are committed to facilitating legitimate travel while taking firm action against those who violate their visa conditions," stated Tunji-Ojo.

In addition to these penalties, a new online portal has been introduced to streamline the process for those with expired visa-on-arrival permits, lapsed single-entry visas, or overdue expatriate residence cards.

The portal allows applicants to apply for a stay permit, upload necessary documents, and receive clearance without visiting an immigration office.

The measures reflect Nigeria's broader strategy to simplify entry procedures while enforcing strict compliance with immigration regulations.

The government's approach aims to balance welcoming legitimate travelers and maintaining robust border security in line with global immigration management practices.
