The federal government has announced a new set of agricultural incentives to spur investment, tackle food insecurity, and generate 21 million full-time jobs.

The policy was revealed by Vice President Kashim Shettima at the FAO’s National & Subregional Hand-in-Hand Investment Forum in Abuja.

Key reforms include the introduction of single-window platforms for land registration, expansion of irrigation projects, improved access to credit for farmers, and large-scale mechanization.

Shettima stressed that Nigeria has the capacity to irrigate more than three million hectares of farmland, but currently utilises less than 10 percent of that potential.

As part of the government’s blueprint under the 2021-2025 National Development Plan, the reforms are also meant to lift 35 million Nigerians out of poverty, ensure food and nutrition sufficiency, and diversify the economy through agribusiness.
