Nigeria’s Senate has resolved to set up a joint ad hoc committee with the House of Representatives to address rising xenophobic attacks against Nigerians in South Africa.

The proposed committee, to be chaired by the leadership of the National Assembly, is expected to undertake a diplomatic and fact-finding visit to South Africa to explore lasting solutions to the recurring crisis.

Lawmakers said the delegation will engage directly with the South African Parliament and formally convey Nigeria’s concerns over reported attacks on its citizens.

The Senate also plans to communicate with the Speaker of the South African Parliament, while the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is expected to brief lawmakers on ongoing diplomatic efforts.

The resolution followed a motion sponsored by Senator Bassey, which highlighted growing cases of violence, discrimination and psychological trauma faced by Nigerians abroad.

During debate, senators raised concerns over what they described as a pattern of profiling and dehumanisation of Nigerians.

The Senate also revisited bilateral agreements reached between Nigeria and South Africa in 2019, following a motion by Senator Simon Lalong, urging their full implementation.

A proposal by Senator Adams Oshiomhole to revoke licences of South African companies, including MTN Group and MultiChoice Group, was rejected on procedural grounds.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio stressed the need for diplomacy over retaliation, saying the response must prioritise engagement rather than economic sanctions.

There was brief disagreement over whether the debate should be held in a closed session after Senator Adamu Aliero suggested it, but lawmakers, including Bala Ibn Na'Allah Ningi, insisted on transparency.

The Senate concluded proceedings with a minute of silence in honour of Nigerians killed in xenophobic attacks in South Africa.
