The newly elected national chairman of the People's Democratic Party (PDP), Dr. Kabiru Turaki, has pledged to end what he described as impunity and the suppression of Nigerians’ will within the party and the country.

Turaki made the promise in his acceptance speech after winning the PDP chairmanship at the party’s 2025 elective national convention in Ibadan on Saturday.

Turaki secured 1,516 votes to defeat his closest rival, Garuba Lado, who received 41 votes, according to results announced at the convention.

He assured party members that the new leadership would not take their support for granted.

“There will be no more impunity and suppression of the will of the Nigerian people,” Turaki said.

“We shall open our ears wide to listen to you to determine what you want, and what you want is what we shall give you.”

Turaki said the party would operate with fairness, equity, and justice under his leadership.

He described the PDP as being at a crossroads but said the newly elected executives were prepared to confront the challenges ahead.

He added that the leadership would begin reaching out to aggrieved members, appealing to those with “genuine grievances” to return to “save Nigeria’s democracy from imminent collapse.”
