
The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) has established an Incident Desk to assist passengers affected by the Abuja-Kaduna train derailment of August 26, 2025.
The desk is expected to handle enquiries, provide regular updates, and ensure effective communication with families and survivors.
A statement signed by Dr. Kayode Opeifa, the NRC Managing Director, mentioned that three dedicated phone lines have been activated for the desk and that 510 of the 583 passengers on the manifest have been reached.
The NRC confirmed that 618 people were on board the derailed train, including 583 passengers, 15 crew members, one medical staff, eight cleaners, and 11 catering workers. All were safely evacuated.
According to him, 20 passengers sustained injuries, with nine reported to be in critical condition.
“Seven persons were initially reported as critically injured, but further tracing by our medical team established that nine were in critical condition out of the 20 who sustained injuries,” the NRC stated.
The corporation also disclosed that engineers had successfully recovered one locomotive and four coaches from the site, which have been railed to Idu Station for assessment. He noted that Work is ongoing to retrieve the remaining locomotive and four coaches.
Dr. Opeifa commended security agencies for ensuring orderliness at the accident site and expressed gratitude to the media for their continued support. He also acknowledged the visit of the Minister of Transportation, Senator Saidu Ahmed Alkali, who inspected the scene and praised the NRC recovery team.
Reassuring the public, the NRC said it was working to restore full train operations as quickly as possible, stressing that passenger safety and service reliability remain its top priorities.
