Nigeria’s National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, has warned that Nigeria must protect its democracy, the only functioning one in the Sahel region, where military coups and instability are common.
Speaking at a forum on preventing violence in northern Nigeria, Ribadu said, “Nigeria remains the only functioning democracy in the entire Sahel, and we must protect that achievement.”
He added that anyone spreading terror or undermining unity would face decisive action.
Ribadu highlighted progress with 775 terrorism-related convictions but cautioned that ongoing violence threatens these gains.

He stressed that sustainable peace depends on local communities, religious and traditional leaders working together to resolve conflicts.
Bishop Matthew Kukah, convener of the National Peace Committee, urged moral leadership and inclusion of women and youth in peace efforts, warning that arming communities only creates a false sense of security.
Both called for unity and active engagement to secure lasting peace in Nigeria and the region.
