The Ogun State Government is asking for a temporary suspension of lead ingot exports as it investigates possible lead contamination in the Ogijo area of Sagamu Local Government.

The call followed an on-the-spot inspection after a viral video raised concerns about potential lead poisoning. The Commissioner for Environment, Ola Oresanya, led a team from the Environment and Health ministries, the state environmental agency, and NESREA to the area.

During the visit, the government shut down seven Used Lead-Acid Battery recycling plants operating in the Ogijo axis.

Oresanya told residents there is no need to panic, saying the state has begun a full health and process audit of the facilities. The review will include testing lead levels in residents, soil, air and water.

He said the government will release its findings once the investigation is completed and will also review the test methods used in the earlier reports shared online.
