The Board of Trustees of the Peoples Democratic Party has rejected a Court of Appeal Nigeria judgment that invalidated the party’s November 2025 national convention.
The decision was announced by the chairman of the board, Adolphus Wabara, at the end of an expanded emergency meeting held Tuesday and Wednesday in Abuja.
The board said it disagrees with the ruling, which nullified the Nov. 15–16, 2025 national convention that produced the Kabiru Tanimu Turaki-led National Working Committee. It added that the party is awaiting legal advice on the next course of action.
The trustees also expressed concern over internal leadership disputes and litigation within the party, saying the conflicts have negatively affected the unity and operations of the PDP as Nigeria’s main opposition party.
However, the board said it would explore the reconciliation window provided in the judgment of the Ibadan Division of the Court of Appeal.
The BoT said it is mindful of the aspirations of party members preparing to contest positions in the 2027 general elections and pledged to take steps to restore unity and strengthen the party ahead of the polls.
As part of the move, the board announced the formation of a special committee to engage legal teams and other stakeholders to resolve disputes within the party.
The trustees also commended the efforts of Bala Mohammed and Seyi Makinde for their commitment to the party.
The board further approved the appointment of Muazu Babangida Aliyu as secretary of the Board of Trustees in line with the party’s constitution.
Meanwhile, the Peoples Democratic Party announced the postponement of its National Caucus, Board of Trustees and National Executive Committee meetings earlier scheduled for the week.
In a notice signed by the party’s national secretary, Toafeek Arapaja, the postponement was described as part of efforts to demonstrate good faith in the court-advised reconciliation process.
The party apologized for any inconvenience caused by the postponement.
The BoT also urged party leaders and members to put aside personal and group interests and unite to reposition the PDP ahead of the 2027 elections, calling on Nigerians to remain hopeful as the party works to strengthen its structure and challenge the All Progressives Congress.
