Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has taken a swipe at President Bola Tinubu over what he described as the manipulation of economic data to hide the country's worsening conditions.
In a post shared on X (formerly Twitter) on Monday, Obi revisited a campaign remark Tinubu made in 2022 while in Delta State. At the time, Tinubu, the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential candidate, had mocked Obi’s data-driven approach, saying, “Na statistics we go chop? All I want is to put food on the table of Nigerians.”
Two years into the Tinubu presidency, Obi argues, the reality is grim.
“Today, Nigeria ranks among the hungriest nations in the world. Millions of citizens are struggling daily to find their next meal,” he stated.
Obi accused the current administration of deploying false and manipulated statistics to create an illusion of progress. He claimed that the government is relying on incorrect data on unemployment, inflation, and GDP growth to distort public perception.
“President Tinubu is now overfeeding Nigerians with wrong statistics... all to put a positive spin on our deteriorating economic and household conditions,” Obi said.
He also reiterated his long-held position that governance should be rooted in truth, character, and competence, not guesswork or propaganda.
“Governance is not rocket science or a gamble. It requires sincerity of purpose, character, competence, capacity, and compassion,” he concluded.
