Former presidential candidate Peter Obi has called on the Nigerian government to stop what he described as the persecution of political opponents under the guise of criminal prosecution.

In a statement posted on X on Monday, Obi expressed concern over the recent arrests and continued detention of former Attorney General of the Federation Abubakar Malami and former Kaduna State governor Nasir El-Rufai.

According to him, the timing of the arrests—coinciding with political efforts aimed at ensuring the current administration is voted out in 2027—raises serious questions about the motives behind the actions.

Obi criticised the repeated transfers of El-Rufai between the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission and the Department of State Services, describing the process as a “fishing expedition” rather than a credible investigation.

He urged authorities to ensure that prosecutorial decisions are based on clear evidence and that legal procedures, including the granting of bail, are handled fairly.

Obi added that Nigeria needs a justice system that protects all citizens equally and warned that selective anti-corruption campaigns targeting political opponents could threaten national stability and economic development.

While reaffirming his support for anti-corruption efforts, Obi said such measures must be implemented with integrity and transparency, starting with those currently in power.
