Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has strongly condemned reports that President Bola Tinubu distributed luxury vehicles to state coordinators of a government-linked political group ahead of the 2027 elections.
In a statement on Thursday titled “Distribution of Campaign Vehicles: Profound Insensitivity and Abuse of Trust,” Obi called the move “a serious moral failure” and “profoundly insensitive” amid Nigeria’s ongoing struggles with hunger, unemployment, and insecurity.
Obi said, “At a time when Nigerians are grappling with poverty and hopelessness, flaunting brand-new Land Cruisers, Hiluxes, and Hummers treats the suffering of the people as mere background for political theatrics.”
He added that leadership should focus on “providing food for the hungry, ensuring healthcare access, restoring hope for unemployed youth, and securing our communities.”
Describing the alleged vehicle giveaway as an abuse of public trust, Obi warned that “this is not governance,” and called for priorities to shift towards addressing the basic needs of Nigerians rather than political showmanship.
The former Anambra governor lamented that many families continue to struggle with school fees, maternal health crises, and insecurity while government resources are reportedly funneled into campaign activities.
