The Nigeria Police Force says it has uncovered a major cyber fraud involving the illegal diversion of a telecommunications company’s airtime and data, with losses estimated at more than ₦7.7 billion.

Police said the case was uncovered after a telecom firm reported suspicious activities within its billing and payment systems.

Investigators found that staff login credentials were compromised, giving the suspects unlawful access to the company’s core infrastructure.

Operations carried out in Kano and Katsina states, with a follow up arrest in the Federal Capital Territory, led to the arrest of six suspects.

Police said recovered items include two houses in Kano, two mini plazas, retail outlets with over 400 laptops and about 1,000 mobile phones, as well as a Toyota RAV4 vehicle.

The suspects are expected to be charged to court after investigations, as the police reaffirmed their commitment to dismantling cybercrime networks.
