A Police inspector has reportedly shot and killed a fellow officer and wounded another colleague during an incident in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital, authorities said.

Inspector Victor Okus, attached to the 17th Police Mobile Force (PMF) but on special duty at Intels Logistics in Onne, allegedly opened fire on two police officers on Sunday afternoon, the Rivers State Police Command said in a statement.

The shooting occurred about 1:20 p.m. at the Next Cash and Carry Supermart in the Trans-Amadi area, where the officers were on joint guard duty with military personnel, the statement said.

The victims, both attached to the 14 PMF unit from Yola, were identified as Inspector Ibrahim Sani and Inspector Daniel Dauda.

Sani was struck in the head and later died from his injuries at Nopsam Hospital, while Dauda, who suffered gunshot wounds to the neck, is receiving treatment at the same facility, officials said.

The body of Sani has been taken to the Military Hospital mortuary in Port Harcourt for preservation and autopsy.

Inspector Okus was immediately arrested and is in police custody pending further action, according to the police public relations officer, CSP Grace Iringe-Koko.

Rivers State Commissioner of Police Olugbenga Adepoju directed a comprehensive and transparent investigation into the shooting.

He said Okus will face an orderly room trial and could be charged in court if found culpable.

Adepoju also reminded officers that responsible handling of firearms is critical and stressed the importance of professionalism and safety while on duty.

No motive for the shooting has been disclosed as investigators continue to examine the circumstances surrounding the incident.
