Officials are yet to remove the aircraft that skidded off the runway at the Port Harcourt International Airport on Tuesday.

But the Port Harcourt airspace has been reopened to other aircraft, an airport official told Nigeria Info.

No aircraft could land at the airport on Tuesday after a ValueJet plane skidded off the runway shortly after landing.

Sixty-seven passengers and five crew members were on board. No fatalities were recorded, but some passengers reportedly sustained injuries.

The airline’s management said the aircraft slipped due to algae on the taxiway, making it unable to maintain the center line situation. It added that the plane wasn’t damaged.

This is the third accident recorded in the aviation sector in the last quarter of 2023. On Sunday, an Aero Contractors aircraft nose-stuck at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja.

The authorities temporarily shut the runway, forcing many airlines to cancel or reschedule their flights in and out of Nigeria’s capital city.

On November 3, a private jet crashlanded with the minister of power, Adebayo Adelabu, on board.
