Following a national grid collapse in Nigeria, electricity supply has been gradually restored to major cities including Abuja and Lagos, officials said as recovery efforts got underway.

The outage, which left homes and businesses without power across large parts of the country, followed a system disturbance in the national grid earlier in the day.

According to grid managers, the disruption was linked to the simultaneous tripping of multiple 330 kilovolt transmission lines and the disconnection of some generating units, which caused electricity generation to drop sharply.

Electricity began returning in the early afternoon as technicians and operators implemented standard black-start restoration procedures, a process that brings generation back online in stages after a full or partial collapse.

By mid-afternoon, supply had been restored to Abuja, parts of Lagos, Osogbo, Benin, Onitsha and other regions, although efforts continue to rebuild stable and sustained service across the grid.

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) and the Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) are coordinating the recovery, working with power generators and distribution companies to reinstate full service and prevent further disruptions.

A detailed investigation into the root causes of the collapse is ongoing, officials said, with a focus on strengthening infrastructure and reducing the risk of future outages.

Many distribution areas continue to experience intermittent supply as grid stabilisation progresses.
