The House of Representatives is set to hold an emergency sitting on Monday to consider legislation seeking a further extension of the implementation period for the capital component of the 2025 budget.
The proposed amendment bill aims to shift the deadline for implementing capital projects under the 2025 Appropriation Act from June 30 to September 30, 2026, providing Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) with an additional three months to execute ongoing projects and utilize allocated funds.
A notice signed by the Acting Clerk of the House, Ibrahim Sidi, informed lawmakers that the emergency session would commence at 11:00 a.m. on June 15, in line with the House Standing Orders.
According to the notice, lawmakers will consider the Appropriation (Repeal and Enactment) Act, 2025 (Amendment) (No. 2) Bill, 2026, which seeks to extend the lifespan of the capital expenditure component of the budget.
The move is expected to address delays in project execution and ensure the completion of key infrastructure and development programmes funded under the 2025 fiscal framework.
Members of the House were urged to accord the sitting priority attendance due to the significance of the proposed legislation.
If approved by the National Assembly and subsequently signed into law by President Bola Tinubu, the extension would allow MDAs to continue implementing capital projects until September 30, 2026.
The emergency session underscores lawmakers' efforts to improve budget performance and prevent the abandonment of critical government projects across the country.
