The Rivers State House of Assembly has resolved to write to Governor Siminalayi Fubara, urging him to forward a fresh list of commissioner nominees, following the end of the six-month emergency rule in the state.

The resolution was made at the House’s first plenary since the restoration of democratic governance, held at the Conference Hall, Legislative Quarters, Aba Road.

The session was presided over by Speaker Martins Amaewhule.

The Assembly also demanded that the governor submit the Rivers State Appropriation Bill, and announced its intention to review how public funds were spent during the period of emergency rule.

Emergency Rule in Rivers State

  • On March 18, 2025, President Bola Tinubu declared a state of emergency in Rivers State, suspending Governor Fubara, his deputy, and all lawmakers.

  • The key issues that triggered the emergency included breakdowns in cooperation over budget approvals, attempts to impeach the governor, disagreements over the makeup of the legislature, and growing concerns over vandalism of critical infrastructure including oil pipelines.

  • During emergency rule, retired Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas was appointed as the Sole Administrator of the state, charged with managing affairs in place of the suspended elected officials.
