Senate Set To Consider State Police Bill At Emergency Sitting

The Senate is expected to consider and possibly pass the Constitution Amendment Bill seeking the creation of state police when it reconvenes for an emergency plenary session on Tuesday.

A principal officer of the Senate, who spoke anonymously, said the leadership has intensified consultations to ensure full attendance after a quorum shortfall delayed consideration of the bill before the recent recess.

According to the source, the chamber failed to secure the constitutionally required two thirds majority needed for constitutional amendments, forcing lawmakers to postpone action on the proposal.

A Senate notice showed that the emergency sitting, convened by Senate President Godswill Akpabio, will focus on national security and other urgent legislative matters.

Lawmakers are expected to reconvene at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, June 23, to deliberate on the amendment, which has already been approved by the House of Representatives.

Supporters of state police say the reform will strengthen local security responses, while critics argue it could be abused by state governments for political purposes.

Nigeria currently operates a centralised policing system under the Nigeria Police Force.
