The debate on the bill to repeal the Electoral Act 2022 and enact the Electoral Bill 2025 was indefinitely suspended on Thursday, with lawmakers asking for time to consult on the matter.

The President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, questioned the rationale behind passing the general principles of the bill without knowing the details.

The Senate Committee on Electoral Matters, headed by Senator Simon Lalong, held a public hearing on the bill on Monday before presenting it for second reading on Thursday.

This prompted the Senate president to question Senator Lalong's reasons for tabling the bill for debate without relevant clauses.

Senator Akpabio stressed the need for Senators to know exactly what they are amending, citing irregularities in past elections.
