Several people were killed and others injured early Thursday when a fire broke out during a New Year’s party at an Alpine ski resort in southern Switzerland, authorities said.
The blaze erupted around 1:30 a.m. at the Le Constellation lounge bar in Crans-Montana, a luxury resort town in the canton of Valais, according to police spokesperson Gaetan Lathion.
“There are several injuries and several fatalities,” Lathion confirmed, though officials have not yet released exact numbers or details on the cause of the fire.
Crans-Montana is a popular destination for winter tourism and high-end holiday resorts.
Police and the canton’s public prosecutor are expected to provide more information at a news conference scheduled for 10 a.m. local time.
