The Nigerian Army has confirmed that one of its personnel, Lance Corporal Akenleye Femi, serving with the 221 Battalion, Wawa Cantonment in Niger State murdered his wife before taking his own life in their apartment on Friday.
According to a statement issued by Captain Stephen Nwankwo, Acting Assistant Director of Army Public Relations for the 22 Armoured Brigade, Ilorin, the tragic incident occurred on 11 October 2025, throwing the Wawa Cantonment community into mourning.
Captain Nwankwo said the couple was found dead in their residence at Block 15, Room 24, Corporals and Below Quarters, within the cantonment. Preliminary investigations, he explained, showed that the soldier had been on duty before seeking permission from his superior officer to attend to personal matters, but never returned to post.
“The remains of the deceased have been preserved, while an in-depth investigation has since commenced to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the tragic incident,” the statement said.
The Army described the event as “unfortunate and deeply regrettable,” extending condolences to the families, colleagues, and friends of the deceased. It also assured the public that the circumstances leading to the incident would be thoroughly investigated and the outcome made public.
“The Commander, 22 Armoured Brigade, Brigadier General Ezra Barkins, assures the general public that the outcome of the investigation will be relayed accordingly, and measures will be put in place to prevent future occurrences,” Captain Nwankwo added.
The Nigerian Army appealed for public understanding and cooperation as investigations continue.
