Widespread protests have continued in Tanzania following a disputed general election marked by the disqualification and detention of key opposition figures. Demonstrators in Dar es Salaam are demanding a halt to the announcement of results, alleging widespread fraud.

Security forces have imposed a curfew, shut down internet access nationwide, and deployed the military as unrest spreads.

Amnesty International reports at least two deaths, though other sources suggest the toll may be higher.

The election saw low turnout after opposition leaders, including Chadema’s Tundu Lissu, were barred from participating, with Lissu detained on treason and cybercrime charges.

Early provisional results show President Samia Suluhu Hassan with a strong lead, a result critics dismiss as predetermined.

Despite digital restrictions, many protesters are using VPNs to mobilize as international rights groups urge investigations into the use of force and demand restored internet access.
