President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved a 100-kilometre stretch of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway to pass through Edo State, expanding the project’s alignment to include the state for the first time.

The Minister of Works, Senator David Umahi, announced the approval during the Edo State Independence Gala Night in Benin City on October 1, 2025.

According to Umahi, the adjustment was made at the president’s directive to ensure that the highway runs through Lagos, Ogun, Ondo, Edo, Delta, Bayelsa, Rivers, Akwa Ibom, and Cross River States.

“The coastal road was first dreamt by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu 47 years back, but sadly, Edo State was not included in the alignment.

"Today, the President has given Edo 100 kilometres of the highway,” Umahi said.

The minister also praised Governor Monday Okpebholo for agreeing to intervene in repairing critical sections of the Benin–Sapele–Warri highway, describing them as “deathtraps to motorists.”

In his remarks, Governor Okpebholo thanked President Tinubu for extending the project to Edo, calling it “a manifestation of the extraordinary love of the President to the people of Edo State.”

He stressed the urgency of fixing bad roads in the state, especially the Benin–Sapele–Warri axis.

“Our people are crying out for this road to be fixed. If I do my part and you do your part, no one will criticize our president,” the governor said.
