The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has confirmed the death of a dispatch rider in a tragic accident involving a moving train at the PWD Railway Level Crossing in Ikeja on Tuesday.

A statement signed by its Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment, Adebayo Taofiq, said the dispatch rider was speeding and attempted to cross the railway line in a rush.

He could not make it to the other side as he collided with an oncoming train.

LASTMA officials, who were first responders at the scene, quickly cordoned off the area.

Security operatives from the Shogunle Police Division provided support, while the State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit (SEHMU) evacuated the body.

The General Manager of LASTMA, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, described the incident as “a distressing reminder of the consequences of impatience and disregard for traffic safety rules, particularly at railway level crossings.”

He appealed to dispatch riders and all motorists to exercise patience and caution on the road, emphasizing the importance of obeying traffic signals and warning signs to avoid preventable tragedies.
