Two people were killed and two others seriously injured in separate road crashes that occurred overnight in different parts of Lagos, the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) said on Monday.
The first accident happened around 2:30 a.m. at Otedola Bridge along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, inward Berger.
LASTMA said an unregistered car, travelling at excessive speed, rammed into a moving, heavily loaded trailer.
Both occupants of the car, including the driver, died on the spot due to the impact.
The trailer driver reportedly fled the scene with the vehicle, according to preliminary findings by traffic officials.
LASTMA’s night patrol team responded swiftly, evacuating the bodies and removing the wrecked vehicle to prevent further danger to motorists. Officers from the Isheri Police Division provided security support, while the State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit later transported the bodies in line with public health protocols.
In a second incident around 5:00 a.m., an empty tanker collided with a sachet water delivery van near the UNILAG waterfront on the Third Mainland Bridge, inward Lagos Island, two people sustained severe injuries.
They received first aid at the scene before being rushed to a nearby hospital by the Lagos State Ambulance Service, LASTMA said.
Despite both incidents, traffic officials continued to manage vehicular movement on the affected routes to prevent additional accidents.
Reacting to the crashes, LASTMA General Manager Olalekan Bakare-Oki expressed condolences to the families of the victims, describing the incidents as tragic and largely avoidable.
He warned motorists against reckless speeding and urged strict adherence to speed limits, stressing that compliance remains critical to saving lives on Lagos roads.
Bakare-Oki also praised LASTMA’s night patrol teams for their prompt response and reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to round-the-clock traffic monitoring and rapid emergency intervention across the state, in line with the Lagos State Government’s public safety drive.
