British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has announced his resignation following growing political pressure and speculation over his leadership after a key by-election victory by Andy Burnham.
In a televised statement outside Downing Street on Monday, Starmer confirmed he will step down as leader of the Labour Party and has informed the King of his decision.
“I will resign as leader of the Labour Party. I have spoken to His Majesty the King this morning to inform him of my decision,” he said.
He added that he has asked the Labour Party’s National Executive Committee to set out a timetable for a leadership contest, with nominations expected to open on July 9 and conclude before the summer recess.
The announcement follows weeks of internal pressure within the Labour Party and shifting political dynamics after Burnham’s win in the Makerfield by-election, which intensified debate over Starmer’s future.
Starmer is expected to remain in office until a new Labour leader is elected.
