United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres on Wednesday welcomed the announcement of a two-week ceasefire between the United States and Iran, urging all parties in the Middle East conflict to comply with international law and the terms of the truce.
The United Nations chief called for full compliance with international law, saying the truce offers an opportunity to achieve lasting peace in the region.
He stressed the need to end hostilities to protect civilians and reduce suffering across affected areas.
Guterres also commended efforts by Pakistan and other countries that helped facilitate the ceasefire.
Meanwhile, his envoy, Jean Arnault, is in the region to support ongoing diplomatic efforts.
