United States Senator Lindsey Graham, a prominent Republican lawmaker and close ally of President Donald Trump, has died at the age of 71 after a brief illness.
A statement posted on his official X account said Graham died on Saturday evening, with his family thanking supporters for their prayers and requesting privacy.
Graham represented South Carolina and was first elected to the US House of Representatives in 1994 before joining the Senate in 2002.
He was re-elected to the Senate in 2008, 2014 and 2020, and most recently served as chairman of the Senate Budget Committee.
South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster described Graham as “irreplaceable,” praising his service and advocacy for the state and the United States.
Graham was also known for his strong support for Israel and his tough stance on Iran.
Israeli President Isaac Herzog expressed shock over his death, describing Graham as an important figure in US-Israel relations and offering condolences to his family.
