Spain head coach Luis de la Fuente has expressed confidence that forwards Lamine Yamal and Nico Williams will be fit in time for Spain’s opening match at the World Cup.
Both players missed the end of their club season due to hamstring injuries, but remain in Spain’s squad for the tournament. De la Fuente said their recovery is progressing well, with the national team working closely with their clubs to manage rehabilitation programmes.
However, he confirmed neither player will feature in Spain’s upcoming friendly against Iraq as a precaution.
“If everything continues as it has been so far, he could be ready on June 15,” De la Fuente said, referring specifically to Yamal, while stressing that readiness does not guarantee playing time.
Spain begin their World Cup campaign on June 15 against Cape Verde in Atlanta, followed by group matches against Saudi Arabia on June 21 and Uruguay on June 27.
Despite injury concerns, Spain remain among the tournament favourites. De la Fuente described the competition as potentially “historic,” noting the unusually wide pool of teams with realistic chances of winning.
The coach said Spain’s focus remains on ensuring full fitness for key players ahead of the opening match as preparations continue in the final days before the tournament begins.
