A resident and stakeholder in Oyigbo, Victor Okpute, says the local government council has yet to establish a flood response committee.

“We have continued to remind the Chairman to set up a committee,” he said on Nigeria Info FM's Morning Crossfire.

Residents have warned they may take to the streets in protest over alleged neglect by the Rivers State Flood Management Committee in ongoing canal desilting and other flood support efforts.

Okpute, who said he had spoken with the Oyigbo council chairman, confirmed that the committee would be formed soon and stressing its importance in coordinating with the state flood committee on relevant data and information.

He also revealed that residents have not received relief materials, despite the state committee recently distributing aid to other flood-affected areas.

Okpute emphasised that beyond immediate relief, the people of Oyigbo LGA need a permanent solution to recurring floods. He urged the state government to implement both structural and non-structural measures to address the problem effectively.
