Resilience or Endurance of Failure?

A caller on The Sunnyside rejected the description of Nigerians as resilient, saying what the country is experiencing is suffering, not strength. He blamed the situation on political corruption, which he said is often enabled by Nigerians who later complain about the consequences instead of planning for a better future.

According to him, unlike Nigeria, other countries do not constantly dwell on past glory or treat it as a regular talking point. He argued that Nigerians have the opportunity every four years to shape their future through elections, but corruption continues to undermine the process and the outcome.

The caller said politicians who gain access to wealth often cling to power and are willing to do anything to avoid returning to poverty. He added that this behaviour is enabled by the people, whom he accused of tolerating suffering instead of demanding change.

He also criticised the way religion is used, saying faith and prayers cannot solve certain social and economic problems or help those in urgent need. According to him, this mindset has conditioned Nigerians to accept hardship, making it difficult to break the cycle of suffering. These views raise the question: Is Nigeria’s “resilience” merely another name for suffering?
