Retired Assistant Inspector General of Police, Abutu Yaro, has expressed disappointment over the current pension benefits for police officers.

In an interview on Nigeria Info’s Morning Crossfire, Rtd AIG Yaro stated that the current pension benefits for police officers are unsatisfactory and demeaning. He raised concerns about the handling of police pensions by the Pension Commission (PENCOM) and the Police Service Commission, adding that if the scheme were properly managed, retired officers wouldn’t have resorted to protest.

On Monday, retired police officers staged nationwide protests over poor pension conditions and other welfare concerns. A key demand was the removal of the Nigeria Police Force from the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS).

AIG Yaro further warned that poor remuneration and benefits not only affect the morale of serving officers but also pose a risk to national security.
